Making a case for keeping a U.S. presence in Asia
Article Abstract:
Maintaining a US presence in East Asia needs the cooperation of the countries in the region, which also benefit from the military security that American troops provide. There must be a formation of friendly alliances, commitment to share concerns, and the US must be included in economic agenda. However, the growing economies of East Asian nations and the introduction of high-technology weapons trigger a decline in the number of military installations and troops in the region.

Growing pains could strain ASEAN unity
Article Abstract:
Consensus among Assn. of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) members may become harder to come by as the organization's membership grows. This is evident in the way ASEAN members accepted Vietnam's entry. While reactions by Thailand and Singapore were lukewarm, Indonesia and Malaysia were more sympathetic to Vietnam. Although standing united against outside forces is not an elusive goal, antagonism within the organization is certain to create problems.
