Can telecommunications substitute for on-the-spot management?
Article Abstract:
A hypothetical situation is developed in which a multinational firm headquartered in Paris is in the process of considering the implementation of a sophisticated video- and teleconferencing system to allow many of its regional directors to return to Paris rather than operate their businesses in the host countries. The CEO, who opposes the plan, learns that news of the plan has leaked to certain regional managers, who are anxious to return to Paris and retain their current positions. The plan is put on hold, but it becomes clear that many of the company's top regional managers will be lost if they are not allowed to return to Paris and run their operations from there. After further coaxing from the personnel manager, the CEO is still unconvinced of the benefits of the teleconferencing plan. Potential solutions to the problem are presented.

Sir Clive Sinclair: entrepreneur still in search of an empire
Article Abstract:
Clive Sinclair, founder of Sinclair Research Ltd. and a noted British inventor, entrepreneur and visionary, takes pride in his ability to come up with the new ideas and innovations that he expects will guarantee the survival of his company in the future. Sinclair Research found success in the market with its ZX82 (Spectrum) home computer, but it is uncertain whether the company will be able to exert the management ability to overcome the technical and marketing problems that lie between it and success in the home computer and consumer electronics markets. Sinclair echos this sentiment, pointing out that it is relatively easy to start a small business in Great Britain but that it is much more difficult to turn a small business into a big business. Sinclair's plans for his company are described.

Rand Araskog redeploys ITT: high tech is the guiding light
Article Abstract:
ITT Corp.'s chairman, president and CEO, Rand V. Araskog, differs from his predecessor in that he has been concentrating on leading ITT through a time of asset redeployment rather than implementing a plan of growth in all directions simultaneously, and he has thus far overseen the divestment of 65 companies since he was named to head the company in 1980. In that time ITT's debt has been cut and its operations pared considerably as it emphasizes high-technology businesses, but this strategy has been questioned by some analysts, who point to the high capital investment required in the telecommunications industry and the impact it can have on the company in the long run. Araskog's plans to succeed in the U.S. from the company's headquarters in Brussells, Belgium are described.
