Canada's commitment to hypo-allergenic housing
Article Abstract:
The increase in allergic reactions has been blamed on rising pollution and houses are seen to be a contributing factor. Some environmentally hypersensitive (EHS) people have an extreme reaction to the normal housing environment, and in Canada, architect Philip Sharp was commissioned to design affordable housing for EHS tenants. The housing was located away from roads, the building envelope was minimised, sources of dust and mould internally were eliminated and inert low emitting materials were used in simple assemblies. The main ventilation and warm-air heating system is ducted forced air and continuous extractor fans minimise mould and other irritants. The floors are of polished concrete and expanded rockwool is used for roof insulation rather than glass fibre.
