An old canal's new life
Article Abstract:
The US is to gove up control of the Panama Canal in Dec 1999, and the canal becomes a commercial business rather than part of the federal government of the US. Officials in the US and Panama argue that the transition will be smooth. The new regime could improve efficiency of the management of the canal, which has been run like a bureaucracy. There is a need for investment and a widening of parts of the canal. There are political risks, and politicians have to respect agreements made over the canal.

A man, a plan, a canal - Panama?
Article Abstract:
There is a plan for a canal across Nicaragua, proposed by Gabriel Pasos, head of EcoCanal. Nicaragua has trade links to the east, yet most large cities are to the west, hence the need for good transportation links. There have been plans for a canal across Nicaragua as early as the 16th century, before the Panama canal was built, and the route historically chosen is the same one proposed by Pasos. The National Assembly of Nicaragua is considering Pasos' plans.
