Candela: the man who gave concrete a free rein
Article Abstract:
Architect Felix Candela, who died in Dec 1997 at the age of 87 years, is best known for his concrete shell roofs. Candela began developing his specialized approach to structure, which is based on the hyperbolic parabola, in Mexico in the 1940s. He found that concrete umbrellas, consisting of four rectangular hyperbolic paraboloids with a central support, created particularly attractive roofs with interesting light entry opportunities. Notable buildings designed by Candela include the Bacardi bottling plant and the Church of La Virgen Milagrosa in Mexico.

Nervi and the art of 'correct construction'
Article Abstract:
The construction theory of Pier Luigi Nervi's work could be described as a fabric, comprising a series of repeated 'stitches'. The way they are woven provide a view of his design approach. The Orvieto hangars have a diagonally intersecting 'weave', while the Turin exhibition hall has a parallel weave, with these basic forms found in most of Nervi's works.
