Cardinal Casaroli
Article Abstract:
Cardinal Agosto Casaroli traveled in communist countries during the 1960s, and developed contacts with Catholics there. He became a cardinal in 1979 and was secretary of state for the Vatican. He was involved in foreign affairs and was fluent in six languages. He was sent to negotiate in Russia and used patience with the communists. His approach was more measured than that of Pope John Paul ll, and some Catholics argued that Casaroli sought too much to appease communists. He retired shortly after Mikhail Gorbachev made a visit to the Vatican.

Cardinal Silva Henrique
Article Abstract:
Cardinal Silva Henrique was appointed archbishop of Santiago, Chile, in 1962, and a cardinal in 1963. He initially hoped to be able to moderate government policy after the 1973 coup, but this hope was shattered after arrests and disappearances of opponents of the regime. He was concerned to protect parishioners who could be arrested and tortured, and he called for a return to democracy in Chile. He decided against standing for president, despite calls from non-Catholics for him to do so.
