Cash advances: academic-turned ambassador taps Asian graduates to endorse American schools
Article Abstract:
Chancellor Chang-lin Tien of the University of California at Berkeley has raised $780 million in private donations for the school, largely from Asian investors. He has met with and advised Chinese premier Li Peng on US intentions. A scientist for most of his academic career, he took a brave stand in 1995 supporting affirmative action despite the ultimately successful efforts to end it at California universities by Gov Pete Wilson. He plans to resign in 1996 to continue his research and work with graduate students, and it is hinted that US Pres Bill Clinton may offer him a diplomatic post.

A question of freedom
Article Abstract:
China's economic reforms are not accompanied by corresponding changes in its press regulations. The modus operandi used in the recent arrest of Ching Cheong, Hong Kong journalist proves that there is little progress in this direction. The status of freedom of the press in other Asian countries like Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand is also discussed.
