Cash-crunched Ukraine is facing a series of large debt redemptions
Article Abstract:
The cash-strapped government of Ukraine is facing a total of nearly $1-billion in debts that must be paid in the coming weeks. The debts include $450 million dollar-denominated Eurobond due on Aug. 29, 1998, and some $500 million of hrynvia-denominated treasuries that will mature in Sept. 1998. Investor were rattled and yields on some Ukrainian Eurobonds surged 25% due to fears over where the country will obtain almost $1 billion to pay for internal and external bonds that will mature in Aug. 1998. Standard & Poor's Ratings Group added to the rising concerns after the agency rated the country's financial status as "precarious."

The change in the Japanese consumption society and issues for the 21st century
Article Abstract:
A review of Japanese economic, demographic and social trends since the end of World War II shows the periods through which the country has evolved. Japan became a mass consumption society in the 1960s and later evolved into an economic power and a mature consumption society. However, economic policies have been poorly construed, and Japan, at the end of the 1990s, has moved into major recession. The government must now impose macro economic measures for structural reform, but new policies must include a wider vision to address new challenges including female equality and environmental concerns.
