The United Kingdom market for cat food grew to 591,000 tonnes in 1993 worth 572 million pounds sterling, from 554,000 tonnes in 1992 worth 525 million pounds sterling. The total pet food market grew 5% by value to 1.55 billion pounds sterling in 1993, while remaining virtually unchanged by volume at 1.4 million tonnes. The cat population has exceeded the dog population for the first time, with cat food sales growing while dog food sales are declining. Pedigree, a subsidiary company of Mars, dominates the pet food market. The market is analysed.

The dog food market is dominated by canned products, accounting for 89% of the sector, although they are losing share to the most dynamic segment, dry dog food. The dog food market is led by Mars UK Ltd. subsidiary Pedigree, closely followed by Dalgety PLC subsidiary Spillers.
