American Express has regained profitability and reestabished its prestige under the management of CEO Harvey Golub. Unprofitable financial businesses were dropped and the core businesses of credit cards, travel services and fund management. However profits grew by only 5.5% in 1996, and may remain sluggish.

Article Abstract:
Visa is attempting to dominate the Western European market by preventing its member banks from working with smaller credit card issuers such as American Express. Of all the larger issuers, Amex has had the most difficulty keeping up with competition.

Verisign has already developed two types of digital signatures, which can identify Internet users to prevent fraud. The California-based company is working with Visa to develop similar signatures for credit card users.
