Celestial vision: StarTV venture is classic Li

Hongkong real estate magnate Li Ka-shing has ventured into the field of satellite television broadcasting. His new venture is called StarTV which is a subsidiary of HutchVision. HutchVision is a joint venture of Li and Hutchison Telecom. StarTV was granted a telecommunications license by the Hongkong government on the conditions that Cantonese programs will commence only in 1993, and that its services will be free, its income to generate from advertising. The break-even period for StarTV is expected to be three years.

Hongkong real estate magnate Li Ka-shing is estimated to have earned about HK$13.4 billion from real estate sales in 1991. The money his real estate group generates is so enormous that investing it has become a matter of speculation. His investment activities are seen as conflicting in view of Hongkong's reversion to China in 1997. Li's earnings are expected to grow to HK$17.8 billion in 1993 and his group's real estate inventory is expected to last until 1995.

Hongkong to the rescue?
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong businessmen are likely to play a major role in the rescue of debt-ridden Olympia and York Properties USA (O&Y). Current estimates of O&Y's financial obligations run to around $20 billion. The property developer's leading creditor is Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) with about $1 billion in exposure. Li Ka-shing, CIBC's largest single shareholder, is expected to benefit the most from aiding in the rescue of O&Y.
