No stomach: media caution clouds reports of food poisoning
Article Abstract:
Cultural sensitivity in Japan has fostered confusion and a lack of clear information about the outbreak of food poisoning that has continued for two months. Experts say it almost certainly arose from meat in slaughterhouses getting accidentally contaminated with intestinal matter, but only recently have inspectors won permission to start visiting slaughterhouses. Many are run by the Burakumin people who were long treated as outcasts in Japan and consigned to 'unclean' work, and still suffer from some discrimination.

Where are the Asian media?
Article Abstract:
Asia needs to develop its own media to compete with foreign media in the region. Western reporting helps Asia by spreading locally gathered news throughout Asia using the common English language and by motivating the Asians to try and improve their own broadcasting. Publishers and editors will have to collaborate and help Asians to use their expertise at a local level.
