Wim Duisenberg, president of the European Central Bank, has been criticized in the European press for his remarks which led markets to conclude that further intervention in currency markets is not likely. The remarks are believed to have hurt the euro which fell to a record low of 83.24 U.S. cents.

Japan's banks to submit plans

Banks in Japan are being pressured to implement new measures that would reduce costs and increase revenues. Such measures would satisfy regulators who are calling for stronger efforts at reform. Japanese banks must submit such plans to the Financial Services Agency.
