Chairmen and bosses
Article Abstract:
British Airways chief executive, Robert Ayling, has resigned after four years in the post, and the company's problems were worsened by a strike by cabin crew. Ayling also chaired the New Millennium Experience Company and this could be seen as a distraction from his British Airways job. A former chief executive is not always the best person to take on the chairman's role, and this appears to be the case at British Airways, where Lord Marshall did not seek to remove Ayling. Marshall should also be replaced.

Cabin wars
Article Abstract:
British Airways has reported a drop in profit and is cutting costs to cope with deregulation as well as recession. Deregulation has affected Europe, while recession has affected Asia. The company also plans to focus on the top end of the market, with a lower proportion of economy seats. The business cabin is being expanded and business class passengers will be able to sleep lying down. Critics fear that the strategy is risky at a time when there is excess supply in the market.
