Challenger 2E completes Greek trial and ponders new training rounds
Article Abstract:
Vickers Defence Systems has finished an in-country comparative trial of its 1,500hp MTU 883 diesel engine-powered Challenger 2E for the Greek Army. The Greek Army is expected to choose from the Challenger 2E and several other candidate vehicles to meet its requirement for some 200 new main battle tanks. Other possible choices include the Leclerc from France, the Strv 122/Leopard 2A5 from Germany and the T-80U from Russia. Prototype tanks of the Challenger 2E also passed with flying colors the testing done at the UK Armoured Trials and Development Unit.

Challenger 2 upgrades move into view
Article Abstract:
The British Army announced that it will conduct a study to prioritize ;enhancements that the Challenger 2 tank requires. The priority list will be submitted for costing in June 1999, and will be discussed with the defense industry in the year 2001. Actual implementation of the improvements will start in 2003. Challenger 2 needs enhancements in digitization, combat identification, fire-control systems, 120mm armament, power/weight ratio, and survival systems. It also needs to have a new commander's station.
