Change time
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that the economic crisis in Asia will have a positive impact on technological developments, as many companies will turn to technology enhancements to improve their productivity. The economic decline is coinciding with some progress in technology for companies, particularly in electronic commerce and wider business usage of the Internet. Considerable media attention has been given to business-to-business deals and direct sales over the Internet, but some observers emphasize that considerable cost savings could result from back-office applications for the Internet.

Bitter memories
Article Abstract:
There is an over-supply of Dynamic Random-Access Memory (DRAM) chips and the price has fallen from $8 in March 1997 to $3.50 in March 1998. Asian producers are trying to manufacture next-generation chips but Japan is most likely to be able to do this successfully. Other countries will find it difficult to change because they have invested time and millions of dollars into DRAM production. A change from 16-megabit to 64-megabit DRAMs has not reduced supply as it was expected to do. The introduction of larger silicon wafers may affect prices but not until at least 2001.
