Changing faces
Article Abstract:
High quality infrastructure in areas such as telecommunications and transportation has played a key role in the development of Singapore's economy. Singapore intends to continue investing in infrastructure, with the two main schemes at present being Tuas View, where the existing industrial estate will be extended, and Jurong Island, a land reclamation scheme amalgamating seven islands off the coast. Other large schemes include the Esplanade-Theatres On The Bay, a S$500 million scheme incorporating three studios, an outdoor amphitheatre and a concert hall.

Staying on track
Article Abstract:
The Asian financial crisis has not had a negative impact on Singapore's competitiveness. The country's economic growth has slowed down, but most of the projects promoted by the Economic Development Board remain on schedule. The government has taken steps to reduce business costs and boost the economy. This will lead to a budget deficit of S$800 million, but Singapore will still have very large reserves and no foreign debt. The government has also announced S$1.9 billion in new development schemes.
