Challenging brickwork
Article Abstract:
Each of the three large, cone-shaped structures at the Landmark, a new entertainment centre in Ilfracombe, England, is a waterproof cavity wall construction. The main barrier against water penetration is a Tyvek waterproofing membrane fixed to stainless steel plates welded to specially designed wall ties. Successive courses of bricks were bedded at a slope of 18 degrees to give a smooth face to the brickwork internally and externally. A circular cavity tray/gutter was created at the base of the exterior of each inner cone to collect water from the waterproofing layer.

Reel brickwork
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Stephen Limbrick Associates was required by planners to make use of high quality traditional materials in its design for the Odeon multiplex cinema development in the centre of Guildford, England. The main part of the envelope of the building is designed as loadbearing brick diaphragm walling. This is designed to meet vertical, shear and lateral wind loads, and also helps the building comply with acoustic restrictions. Fletton bricks are used for cross-ribs and inner leaf, while the outer leaf is buff and red multi facing brickwork.

The expressive power of brickwork
Article Abstract:
A strong sense of intimacy can be created by using bricks imaginatively. When monotony is avoided, bricks become very emotive, and a well-designed brick structure can make people feel self-confident and liberated. Brick cladding should not be simply utilitarian, but should include elements of fun, colour and excitement. It is vital that attention is given to ensuring that traditional skills in designing with brick are not lost forever.
