Chechnya's war frightens the Caucasus
Article Abstract:
There is a danger of regional instability from the conflict in Chechnya, which has seen 180,000 refugees leave. The border between Chechnya and Russia has been shut by Russia, but there is access to Georgia over mountains. A marketplace and hospital in Grozny. Chechnya's capital, have been hit by Russian air strikes. Russia refuses to talk to Chechen leaders until certain Chechens have been placed in Russian hands. There is little coherence in the policy of western countries over the conflict.

Article Abstract:
The alleged death of Chechen leader Jokar Dudaev will leave the breakaway public in a flux because his group has no suitable candidate to replace him or provide needed leadership. The weak truce established between rebels and Russia is further weakened and could hurt Pres Yeltsin's reelection efforts.

Article Abstract:
Boris Yeltsin's convincing victory in the Apr 25, 1993 referendum does not mean that he can push his policies through unchallenged. The Congress of People's Deputies will continue to hamper him unless he can get a new constitution implemented.
