De Beer's worst friend
Article Abstract:
The Central Selling Organization (CSO) of De Beers organizes a global cartel for diamonds, but there have been a number of threats to this cartel. Demand from Asia has dropped. Australian producers have left the CSO, while Russia could by-pass it. Supply from Angola has also been a problem although Unita is handing over diamond producing areas to the government and ceasing to smuggle diamonds. The Angolan government is allocating new concessions, some of which are going to Russians. Political problems could affect production in Angola, but this is not certain and De Beers may be affected by increased Angolan production.
