Children of plenty: parents spoil their kids - to show off new-found wealth
Article Abstract:
Middle-class families in Southeast Asia often show their wealth by spending large amounts on their children, according to Dave McCaughan, consumer insights director for McCann-Erickson ad agency in Bangkok. The trend creates opportunities for high-end luxury goods, according to Hugh Davies, marketing services director for Leo Burnett advertising firm in Bangkok. The new rich in Thailand often buy designer products in bulk. However younger consumers in Asia differ from their Western counterparts, in that they are unlikely to rebel against their parents and society.

A fair stretch
Article Abstract:
ABN Amro Bank bought a 75% stake in the Bank of Asia for $183 million and although it believes it paid a fair price for the bank, the equities market has fallen further in price. ABN Amro is letting the managers remain in their jobs to try and increase the value of the shares before paying over the full price. This may mean that ABN has to pay more or less than the agreed price. Other banks are unlikely to do the same because the Thai economy is still in difficulty, stock prices continue to fall and there is reluctance to sell assets off cheaply.

Probe politics: inquiry into MP's alleged drug ties could be a sham
Article Abstract:
Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-Archa of Thailand has appointed former Deputy Prime Minister Thanat Khoman to investigate charges against two senior members of Banahrn's Chart Thai party. The move drew strong condemnation from analysts, as the strongest charges against MPs Wattana Asawaheme and Narong Wongwan come from the US, and Thanat is known for his strong anti-US views. Branded a whitewash, the investigation may seek to exonerate the two, or it could condemn them, giving Banharn more control over their fates.
