China makes its own rules: foreign interference is all right if it's to Beijing's advantage
Article Abstract:
China has announced that Niger is to recognise China rather than Taiwan, but South Africa still deals with Taiwan rather than China. China argues that countries should not deal with both China and Taiwan, yet has sought to persuade South Africa to switch allegiances when that country already has links with Taiwan. Nelson Mandela, president of South Africa, argues that this is an internal issue relating to China and Taiwan, and China also argues that it is internal. If this is so, China should not attempt to involve other countries in a bid to isolate Taiwan.

China keeps mild Taiwan line; Beijing unlikely to take military action without new provocation
Article Abstract:
Recent statements by Chinese Premier Li Peng and official publications indicate mainland China is unlikely to move militarily against Taiwan in the near future. In a Jan 30 speech Li repeated much of the conciliatory speech President Jiang Zemin delivered a year earlier, including a suggestion that military force would be used against outsiders trying to split Taiwan from China. Jiang and Li have invoked the revered patriarch Deng Xiaoping to justify their policy, suggesting his credibility is needed to satisfy hawks.
