China's elite honor their alma mater: former student at Beijing University recall transformations
Article Abstract:
The Beijing University or Beida to the alumni, has been instrumental in the changes seen in China, from the time of Chairman Mao Tse-tung and the dominance of the Communist Party to the free-market reforms of Chairman Deng Xiaoping. The University was formerly the instrument of the goverment to push its Communist ideals, but was later transformed into the epitome of academic freedom with the arrest of the Gang of Four and the second ascendancy of Deng. Many of Beida's alumni served as the instrument of China's rural transformation and the loosening of Communist ideals in the field of economics.

Kangaroo and emu meat are now accepted Australian fare, as well as witjuti, the dry zone Acacia tree grub worm for the more daring palate. Creative chefs are using Asian and European culinary influences to bring out more innovative Australian cuisine.
