Japan's new coalition government may have interrupted a pattern of periodic radical nationalism. It appears to welcome open relations and is trying to resolve the international call for Japanese involvement in peacekeeping operations with its constitutional ban against military force.

A new nationalist movement is gaining momentum in Japan, where intellectuals espouse what is special about Japan and how it can work in other Asian countries. Western nations do not need to be apprehensive about this but they should seek better communication and understanding.
