China's improving economy brings moribund stock markets back to life

China's market for Class B shares is again on the rise, boosted by favorable economic developments and the entry of new issues. Indexes for B shares, which are foreign-currency-denominated stocks foreign investors are allowed to purchase, have surged since early Jul. 1995. In Shanghai, the index rose by 12.5% to 60.08 on Aug. 18, 1995, while in Shenzhen, the index climbed 11.7% to 699.63.

Hopes lift China 'B' shares
Article Abstract:
China's stock market has gained momentum on a hope that regulators will lift restrictions preventing local investors from buying shares reserved for foreigners. Prices of Class B shares, traditionally designated for foreign ownership, have increased in Nov. 1996 from near-record lows to levels approximating the prices of Class A shares, which is designated only for Chinese nationals.
