China's prospects lifted equity funds in second quarter
Article Abstract:
Data from Lipper Inc. indicate that mutual funds invested in companies in Northeast Asia outperformed mutual funds focused on Southeast Asia, and that the trend was to buy growth stocks, rather than value stocks. Some investors who have stocks in Chinese enterprises listed in Hong Kong did very well during the second quarter of 2001, partly due to expectations that China will enter the World Trade Organization in 2002. Gains were possible in Southern Asia, although the Bombay Stock Exchange endured a variety of difficulties.

Pickerell stays on course
Article Abstract:
Jardine Fleming Asset Management Chairman Blair Pickerell praises the launch of China's first open-end mutual fund, which was introduced by Huaan Fund Management Co. The terrorist attacks in the U.S. turned away some would-be investors, but institutions purchased the leftover portion of the retail tranche. More open-end launches are not expected until the "geopolitical-security situation" is resolved and markets become steady again.
