China Central Television ran reports about illegal taxes and fees being imposed on local farmers in Shangrao county in China's Jiangxi province. The economic slowdown in China and more lax controls have meant that officials are searching for new ways to make money. The broadcasts are an indication that the government is permitting state journalists to cover more sensitive stories.

Beijing plans to give pension system a shot in the arm
Article Abstract:
China is planning to sell part of its holdings in state-owned companies in order to create revenue for the country's pension system while helping China's business sectors move closer to privatization. China's policy of lifetime support for its workers along with an increase in retirees and a decrease of new workers has left the pension system nearly bankrupt.

Mixed bag for broadcasters in China
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government is giving limited broadcasting rights to foreign television broadcasters in China. Entering the government-broadcaster contract will mean coming under government censorship, while broadcasting directly by satellite will be illegal. The author sees the new contract as limiting, but a step in the right direction.
