Observers look to Korea first for clues to U.S. direction

As the United States prepares for the presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore Jr., analysts in China, Japan, and South Korea do not expect big changes in foreign relations with the United States regardless of who is elected. One issue concerning Asian leaders however, is that a Bush victory might disrupt the peace talks between North and South Korea.

Recession fears stoked by GDP data, jobless increase

Japan's economy is continuing to falter, as the industrial activity index dropped 1.9% in the April-June quarter and the unemployment rate reached 5% in July. Debates are surfacing over the central bank's quantitative easing program, and Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi plans to review more economic support programs once further GDP data is released.
