Chinese banks gird for WTO
Article Abstract:
China Construction Bank, Agricultural Bank of China and others are moving ahead with efforts to actually provide customer service in an effort to attract customers, thanks largely to the entrance of China into the World Trade Organization. Membership in WTO could open China's banking sector to competitors such as HSBC and Citibank. The modernization of the banking sector, could, in turn, revolutionize China's entire economy, by giving entrepreneurs access to capital, or could, on the other hand, lead to bank failures that would require massive government bailouts.

Lack of controls at Daiwa is problem common among other banks, critics say
Article Abstract:
Daiwa Bank Ltd. admitted that mismanagement and lack of controls were responsible for the loss of $1.1 billion from the bank's funds through fraudulent trades conducted by its trader, Toshihide Iguchi. However, they argued that Daiwa's case was an isolated incident, but critics of Japanese banks think otherwise. They believe that lack of controls due to absence of a risk management system is a common problem among Japanese banks and says that the incident can also happen to other banks.
