Chip maker ends its slump; Samsung Electronics reports improved earnings
Article Abstract:
Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. increased its profits in 1998 finally ending a lengthy period of waning profits that began in 1995. The giant South Korean memory chip maker reported net profits of $266.4 million, more than double its earnings for 1997. Much of the profits could be attributed to the dramatic 50% rise in the price of 64 mega-bit dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips. Analysts expect DRAM prices to hold up this year and are predicting another hefty increase in profits for 1999 as cost-cutting measures improve the company's margin.

Recognizing the region: U.S. fund managers are poised to plunge into Asia's stocks again
Article Abstract:
US economic problems and the vulnerability of European banks are making investors look at the Asian market with renewed interest. Rising currency levels and a general decline of interest rates are among the primary reasons why some forecast US fund managers to increase investment in the region. However, there are also some analysts who caution against the optimism surrounding Asian securities because net outflows are still present for some funds and market correction is predicted to pull down the region again.
