Choppy waters
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian ringgit has suffered from attacks by speculators, but many analysts believe the Malaysian economy in general is sound. The ringgit exchange rate dropped 2% against the American dollar on Jul 14 1997 following the Thai baht devaluation, but most analysts believe the economy can survive that amount of pressure, and do not anticipate a further major fall. Some analysts believe that high interest rates will lead to growth falling below 6% in 1998, but others see encouragement in the fact that external debt is only 1% of GDP.

Strength in numbers
Article Abstract:
Figures announced by Malaysia's central bank on Mar 27, 1996 show a strong economy whose only point of serious concern is an overall balance of payments in the red by 4.4 billion ringgit. GDP growth in 1995 hit 9.5%, up from 9.2% in 1994, while inflation subsided from 3.7% to 3.4% amid full employment. The services current-account deficit hit 18.8 billion ringgit, while the merchandise surplus was 630 million ringgit. Total foreign debt is 68 billion ringgit, a modest 40% of GNP. Overall, the economy may have peaked.

The best of times
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's stock market responded uncertainly to the Apr 5, 1995 announcement of elections to be held on Apr 25. The overall economy seems strong, though several indicators point in opposite directions. Trade figures were healthier than expected, thanks largely to high tourism revenues. Monetary policy will probably remain tight and interest rates move higher, though some loosening was expected through the election itself.
