Class distinctions

Article Abstract:

The Vietnamese government is struggling to educate a population which is growing by an annual 1.5 million. Some primary classes contain 60 pupils, some schools have added a third shift to the day, and there is a shortfall of 115,000 teachers. Vietnamese leaders are grateful for the growth of semi-private schools as they ease the pressure on the state system, but they are also concerned that they will accentuate increasing class distinctions. Only the wealthier parents can afford to send their children to these schools.

It won't fly: inquiry into failed satellite launch raises questions

Article Abstract:

China Great Wall Industry and Hughes Space & Communications have not persuaded the space community with an investigation concluding the failure of a Jan 1995 satellite launch was the fault of neither. Blaming the explosion on high winds, the two released a one-page joint statement that underwriters find virtually worthless, and some signs show the two companies still disagree on the underlying problems. Insurers are likely to raise their rates for future China launches. A previous launch attempt ended similarly.

Quest for power

Article Abstract:

Foreign concerns and the Vietnamese government have been unable to reach agreement on constructing new power plants. This means that electricity shortages have been more serious than would otherwise have been the case. International concerns such as Broken Hill Proprietary and Marubeni seeking to construct power plants in Vietnam claim that the Vietnamese government is trying to impose strict limits on profits, while the government is unwilling to pay unreasonable prices, even though power shortages are severe.
