Is small beautiful?
Article Abstract:
Fund managers in Hong Kong are leading an Asia-wide surge of interest in small-cap stocks that elsewhere outperform their larger brethren. However, in addition to the liquidity drawbacks, many small Asian companies are run by families that only offer them publicly in order to cash out. Those available on the market are often not the best-run, say some experts, making it an area best suited to stock-pickers. Two new Hong Kong funds, Smith New Court Small-Companies Index and the Hang Send MidCap 50, aim at that market.

Business decision
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong soft-porn star Julie Riva cites a dismal economy as her reason for cutting back on new projects and switching from films to dance music. As a writer, producer, director, and actor, she is well known for cult Category III films featuring bizarre sex and violence, reaching lower-paid workers through adult cinemas. While the sex buisiness is among the first to benefit from a rising economy, it also suffers first in the doldrums, and Riva says it is affecting all the women in Hong Kong's sex-film industry.

Wave of resistance: boat people get wind of U.S. softening on asylum
Article Abstract:
A proposal in the US House of Representatives to re-screen many Vietnamese refugees to see whether some should be admitted to the US may have sparked riots and could slow down repatriating others to Vietnam. Govt and UN officials in several Asian nations hoped to close their camps by year's end, and many were offering $440 to those returning voluntarily while promising a mere return to the intransigent. By holding out hope to those who fought with it in Vietnam, the US has complicated these plans.
