Clear signal: Germany gives go-ahead to Burmese opposition radio
Article Abstract:
The Foreign Ministry in Bonn, Germany, has decided not to prevent the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) radio station from broadcasting from Germany. The decision will enable the station to resume negotiations with Deutsche Telekom about improving reception of short-wave transmissions to Burma. Deutsche Telekom previously withdrew from the deal when the German Foreign Ministry had concerns about providing frequencies to opposition radio stations. Bonn recognises the need for information in Burma, and calls for dialogue rather than trade sanctions to promote change in Rangoon.

Stamp of approval: carpet-makers offered 'no child labour' mark
Article Abstract:
The Delhi-based Rugmark Foundation now offers a program to certify that hand-made carpets in India are not made with child labor or by underpaid adults. On Jan 11, 1995, the first caprets bearing this trademark arrived in Germany. More than 100 rug-makers have shown interest in the program, which will soon expand to Nepal. Certified carpets should only cost 2-3% more than similar, uncertified ones. More than 400,000 children work in the industry in India, often under debilitating conditions, as do many more in Pakistan and Nepal.
