Article Abstract:
The clothing industry in Spain has been suffering from a gradual decline in sales although it is predicted that the industry will grow by 3% in the future. Consumer spending on footwear and clothing in Spain had fallen to 7.7% in 1994 from a high of 10.9% in 1986. Each person spent on average Ptas65,058 on clothing and footwear in 1994 in comparison to Ptas72,644 during 1992. Some independent outlets have closed whilst there has been a small increase in hypermarkets. El Corte Ingles is the largest retailer, with 15% of the clothing market and sales worth Ptas761,743 million in 1995.

Article Abstract:
Consumer spending in Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium is expected to increase at least 2% in 1998, with spending in Spain and the UK expected to grow more than 3%. Consumer spending is likely to continue to rise in 1999 and 2000. The European economy is expected to grow in 1998, with domestic demand a key supporting factor. Consumer demand was weak in France and Germany in 1997 but is expected to increase in 1998 due to the likely economic impact of the launch of Economic Monetary Union in January 1999.
