Article Abstract:
Output from Italian clothing producers increased slightly in value terms in 1997 to reach L54,500 billion. Exports increased by more than 2% but imports increased by 13% in value terms. Italian footwear production was growing in the three years before 1997 but decreased during 1997 to 460 million pairs. Domestic sales of footwear were steady in 1997 but decreased by 1% in volume terms in 1998.

The footwear and clothing market is likely to be strong in the UK but in Italy pricing levels will be very competitive. General growth in spending has been less favourable in Italy and Germany but improving in the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.
