Belgian production of made-up clothing reached 85.9 billion Belgian francs in 1994, up 2.5% from 1993. Clothing industry sales during the year totalled 85.9 billion Belgian francs, up 4.6% from 1993. Clothing exports to the rest of the European Union fell by 4.5% in the first nine months of 1994, with clothing imports down 3.5%. Belgian footwear output fell 31% in volume during 1993, with consumption down 6% to 38.8 million pairs.

Apparent consumption of footwear in Belgium was 38.6 million pairs in 1993, down from the 1980s and early 1990s. Production was down 31% to 2.3 million pairs, while imports rose to a record 57 million pairs, at a value of 21 billion Belgian francs. Belgium still has a high density of specialist shoe retailers, accounting for around 80% of total sales in value terms.

Clothing and footwear in Germany
Article Abstract:
Production of footwear and woven clothing fell in 1994 in Germany. Output of woven clothing decreased by 4% in value to 25.6 billion Deutsche marks. Footwear output declined by 12% to 49.5 million pairs. German expenditure on clothing and footwear will rise by roughly 1% annually in real terms, according to the EIU.
