Furniture and furnishings in Italy
Article Abstract:
Italian furniture production amounted to L24.56 trillion in 1996, down 1.6% from 1995. The contraction of the domestic market accounted for lower production figures, with output in the important sitting room and bedroom furniture sectors down 6%. Furniture imports for the period fell by 2.7% in value, although seating imports plummeted by 59%. The only buoyant sector of the market is office furniture, with imports up 45% in 1996. Some 60% of value imports of furniture is from other EU countries, with Eastern Europe accounting for 9%. It is expected that furniture production will continue falling in 1997.

Article Abstract:
Germany furniture production amounted to some DM42.5 billion in 1996, down 1% from 1995. Furniture imports for the period totalled DM12.7 billion, with Eastern Europe being a major supplier. The retail furniture market is estimated at about DM60 billion. It is expected that sales of furniture and furnishings will continue falling in 1997 and will begin to pick up momentum in 1999.
