Clothing and footwear in France
Article Abstract:
The French textile and clothing industry returned to growth in 1997, with the home market up 1.3% and exports up for the first time in 10 years. The sector represents 9% of the country's industrial workforce, and small and medium sized companies face global competition. There were marked increases for exports of denim jeans and workwear, while suits and jackets decreased. Mens and boys wear imports saw an increase of 10%, and consumption rose by 3.8%. Women's and girls' outerwear saw turnover up by 2.7% in 1997 and exports rose by 6%. Footwear production continues to fall, although turnover rose by 4%.

Article Abstract:
Clothing output in Belgium declined again in 1997, although by less than the previous year's decline, according to the National Institute of Statistic and the Conseil Central de l'Economie. Production value grew marginally and export sales expanded. The footwear industry also contracted in 1997, with output down by 4.7% to 908,000 pairs. The market for clothing is expected to benefit from growing consumer confidence and export growth is likely to stay strong.

Women's and girls' outerwear in France
Article Abstract:
The ready-to-wear women's outwear market in France has seen a strong flow of exports, accounting for 38% of the industry. Turnover increased to 29.97 billion French francs in 1997. Imports reached 14.3 billion French francs in 1997. Manufacturing under sub-contract and the passive finishing trade in other countries are important. The share of total consumers' spending on clothing has fallen as the country has become wealthier.
