Clothing and footwear in Germany
Article Abstract:
Turnover of German woven clothing producers fell during the five years to 1996, but stabilized during the succeeding two years at DM22.4 billion. Exports rose by an annual average of 3.5% during that period, and imports rose by an annual average of 2%. German demand for clothing fell by 2% in 1998. Analysts believe that production, exports and domestic sales by German clothing producers will all fall during 1999. Output from German footwear producers increased by 2.7% in 1998 to 41.5 million pairs, but it fell in value terms. Domestic demand for footwear is steady at around 330 million pairs per year.

Clothing and footwear in Germany
Article Abstract:
Production levels in the German footwear industry fell by 5% in 1996, with the number of footwear companies decreasing by 10% to 180. The majority of footwear sold in Germany is imported particularly from the Far East and Eastern Europe. The total value of the clothing market has increased only very gradually from 1991 where sales were worth DM116 billion to sales worth DM120 billion in 1996. The turnover of clothing products declined by 4.7% in 1996 with 10% of factories closing. Prices are not likely to increase rapidly but exports may be helped by the decreasing value of the D-Mark.
