Clothing and footwear in the Netherlands
Article Abstract:
Clothing sales in the Netherlands are estimated to have reached 15.2 billion Dutch guilders in 1994 and have suffered from the move by consumers to cheaper products. Clothing consumption has fallen by 4.5% in volume and 9% in value. The babywear segment is the only one to have experienced a rise in both value and volume. Ready-to-wear clothing sales, including exports, reached 1.2 billion Dutch guilders in 1994, with domestic sales estimated at 650 million Dutch guilders. Footwear production for 1994 is valued at 340.1 million Dutch guilders, with output of both leather and non-leather shoes falling. Total footwear production reached 5.5 million pairs.

Clothing and footwear in France

The French clothing market remains depressed, with production volumes and consumer expenditure both declining. More than 52% of turnover is accounted for by women's wear, followed by men's wear with 30% and children's wear with 18%. France is the world's fourth largest consumer of textiles and clothing, with the the market totalling some 220 billion French francs. Footwear production in 1994 totalled 155 million pairs, with value sales down 9% from 1993. Consumption of footwear during the year rose by 5% to some 337.6 million pairs.

Clothing and footwear in Italy
Article Abstract:
The domestic Italian market for clothing and footwear remained almost unchanged in 1994, according to provisional data. Output of made-up clothing decreased by 14.8% to 174,600 t in 1993. Imports almost stayed at their 1992 level, which is equal to a roughly 3.3% drop in volume. Footwear output increased by nearly 8% in 1993. Imports fell by 20% in volume.
