Clouds over Argentina
Article Abstract:
Argentina has tightened spending policy in order to reach a budget deficit target and ease concerns of financial markets about the current account deficit. The Argentine peso is linked to the US dollar, and this has allowed for growth and price stability. Economic growth is forecast to slow to 3.5% or less in 1999 though the government argues that it has improved Argentina's defenses against contagion from external markets compared to 1995. A presidential election is planned for 1999 and the opposition party could win.

Toiling friends: Argentina
Article Abstract:
A general strike called on Aug 14, 1997, in Argentina by two organized labor unions was done so over issues of health benefits, wage-bargaining and high employer costs. The strike had little effect on the workings of the country, but the power of the unions was still evident with reforms that were proposed.
