Let's start again: European Union moves to revamp ties with ASEAN
Article Abstract:
A recent policy paper from the European Commission advocates closer cooperation and trade with the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), following statements from top European officials that ASEAN will remain central to Europe's relationship with Asia. ASEAN's seven member countries want to diversify their foreign trade and other links, and Europe seems equally interested in developing new partnerships. A formal cooperation pact between the two bodies is unlikely, however, given Portugal's insistence on East Timor concessions from Indonesia.

Polite exchange: but Asia and Europe are split on WTO's role
Article Abstract:
A meeting in Brussels on July 24 and 25, 1996, among senior trade officials from Europe, China, Japan, S Korea, and the seven Asean countries yielded some progress on trade topics and little debate over human rights. European countries want to reduce a range of non-tariff trade barriers in Asia, such as vague or secret laws, license requirements, customs or testing procedures, and intellectual property rights nonenforcement. Asia seems eager to meet the Europeans midway, limiting items on the World Trade Organization's agenda.
