Coke gets the nod to buy out venture

Coca-Cola Co.'s bid to buy out its Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, joint venture has been approved by Vietnam Prime Minister Phan Van Khai. The US softdrink company has offered to raise its stake in government-owned Coca-Cola Chuong Duong, from 60% to 100%, after realizing that its local partner could not afford to provide more funds to the joint venture, which reported losses of $12.4 million since it was licensed in 1995. According to officials in the Ministry of Planning and Investment and in the Prime Minister's office, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam had endorsed in an official letter the approval of Coke's bid to completely control the firm. Coca-Cola has refused to comment on the news.

French hypermarket is out of reach for most Vietnamese consumers

Groupe Borbon has opened its first hypermarket in Dong Nai province, Vietnam amidst the Asian economic crisis that has hit Vietnam hard. The $16 million superstore stands in contrast to the rice paddies of the province, Dong Nai being the rice basket of Vietnam. The Cora Commercial Center is a partnership of Groupe Borbon and the state-controlled Dong Nai Import-Export Co. which owns 30% of the firm. The goods stocked in the store take into account local tastes, hence, the presence of 32 varieties of dried fish and an extensive choice of bones used for making soup stock.

Vietnamese are blase over party congress
Article Abstract:
The Vietnamese are not showing any interest in the Vietnamese Communist Party's Ninth Congress because the documents that will be presented at the meeting indicating nothing much will change. The documents, which are printed in the press, are better written, have superior analysis, and discuss problems more frankly, but they include list goals that overlap and contradict without setting priorities. No indication is given that they will be implemented.
