Colombia on the brink
Article Abstract:
There seem to be reasonably good prospects for establishing social, economic and political stability in Colombia, even though the country's economy remains weak and corruption and drugs are still serious problems. The main source of hope is President-elect Andres Pastrana, whose election has brought the prospect of an end to the guerrilla war. It will prove very challenging to move towards peace, but there is a strong will to do so.

Latin America's other hostages
Article Abstract:
Some 60 Colombian soldiers were taken hostage on Aug 30 1996 by guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and they are still being held six months later. The FARC guerrillas, a growing force in Colombia, are funded at least in part by the country's drug money.
