Major has not yet decided whether he will participate in political debates with his main opponent Tony Blair. Since Major is 21 points behind Blair in the polls, he may have little to lose by debating. Rules require that Liberal Democrat candidate Paddy Ashdown be included, a drawback for the Tories.

Ulstermen to the rescue

UK leader John Major has been negotiating with Ulster Unionist James Molyneaux. Northern Ireland will get over half the European Community's economic aid to the UK, and a select committee will be established in the House of Commons. Local government in Northern Ireland will gain more power.
