Coming together
Article Abstract:
Economic regionalism is taking shape in East Asia. The Economic Cooperation Organization, formed by Turkey, Iran and Pakistan, incorporated five republics of the former Soviet Union on Nov 29, 1992 in Islamabad. The Organization created a development bank and preferential tariff arrangements. Asean, founded in 1967, adopted the Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) in Oct 1992. Though other Asian nations and Australia could benefit from a tie-up with Afta, the US, South Korea and Indonesia have opposed the idea of East Asian economic cooperation.

Cheered on by Japan
Article Abstract:
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad is popular among Japanese politicians. Mahathir, who has become controversial in Western circles for his blunt attacks on Western values, is regarded by Japanese statesmen as a leader of Asian interests. In a visit to Tokyo, Japan seemingly encouraged Mahathir to introduce the concept of a closer East Asian economic cooperation.
