Running for cover: Japanese court case reveals insurer's woes
Article Abstract:
Japanese Chiyoda Mutual Life Insurance Co's filing of a court case against businessman Hideki Yokoi shows the negligence of Japanese life insurance companies during the 1980s. Chiyoda Life loaned Yokoi 75 billion yen to redevelop a commercial property without realizing that he was a high credit risk because of his involvement in criminal activities. The company was forced to sue Yokoi when he failed to make payments. A number of insurance companies in the 1980s were forced to make loans to high credit risk borrowers because the insurers had to fund high payouts to their policyholders.

Batteries low: Japanese electronics firms look for a hit product
Article Abstract:
Consumer electronics companies in Japan are trying to find products which will bolster sagging profits. Forecasts of profits have been downgraded by Nintendo Corp and Matsushita, with others such as Sanyo, Sony and Pioneer expected to follow. The problem comes from declining consumer purchases in the face of a tight economy. Further problems arise from new products which are not new enough to generate consumer interest, as shown by the 1993 Japan Electronics Show.
