Commercial propositions
Article Abstract:
Commercial banks face competition in their traditional business of taking deposits to make loans to firms, and some banks have responded by moving into investment banking. A number of banks have tried this route, and they include US banks during the early 1980s, and banks in mainland Europe in later years. Credit Suisse and JP Morgan have succeeded in their goal, but there have also been a number of failures. Culture clashes between investment banking and commercial banking as well as insufficient understanding of markets have hampered the banks.

The colour, and sex, of money
Article Abstract:
Wall Street has been portrayed as parochial in a number of headlines. Christian Curry has accused Morgan Stanley of homophobia and racism, while Citigroup faces a discrimination suit and Merrill Lynch has agreed on the merit of 900 complaints against the company. Only some 5% of the work force on Wall Street is black, and the proportion is lower at managerial levels. Women also see Wall Street as paying less and offering them fewer opportunities than men.
