Article Abstract:
Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, China and the US can embark on a concerted effort to help the troubled countries of Asia rise from its difficulties. The plan should include an Asian fund, trade and investment reforms and global support. A so-called eminent persons group found that South Korea and Southeast Asia should show their determination and capability to implement reforms, beginning with bolstering their financial systems.

The ongoing war waged in East Timor would not only create a considerable impact on Indonesia's political landscape, but would generate serious repercussions on the country's international relations. The impact of the war would particularly stain Pres B.J. Habibe's bid for another presidential term. If the government fails to put an end to the war, other Asian countries may be compelled to turn their back on Indonesia.
